stalling with dial-up

I am running Kubuntu and connect to the internet with dial-up. I have observed that on mail.yahoo.ca my connection stalls and I must hit the refresh button. This "unsticks" the connection and the page is finally rendered. I have reduced my MTU/MRU to 400 (from 562) but this does not help. Any advice?

Does this happen with Firefox and Konqueror, or only in Konqueror? I would believe this occurs because of the traffic flow at the time of day YOU are seeking that "URL". Possible schedule change could help. Are YOU using a proxy, or in a shared ISP setup? Like dorm; or school, or work? That would definitely explain the bandwith problems.

It was a classical home setup.
