SSH From One Country to Another

I have set up a server using SuSE Linux 9.3 that is currently acting as a Samba file server in a small office. I have ordered a static IP address from my ISP. They gave me 6 IP addresses (xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1-6).

Internet=======[ Router(IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xx6) ] -------Server(IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1)
| | |
PC1(IP..xx2) PC2(IP..xx3) PC3(IP..xx4)

(Currently IP..xx5 is not in use.)

I have set up my server to use the first designated IP address (IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1) this IP address is the one I was told to use for the server as it is truly "static". Everything within the office works great (thanks samba). I set up my router to allow VPN pass through, and had it designate each hardware MAC address in the office to each specific IP address designated above. Again everything works great internally.

I then had SuSE install OpenSSH via YaST (its shitty package management system). I then went in to services and allowed SSH passthrough within the software firewall that exists on the server. I am assuming that SuSE will use the standard port 22 etc.. I then made sure that SSH was loaded at start up by;

Code:
# ln -s /etc/init.d/sshd /etc/init.d/rc5.d/
I then restarted the server.

I am not quite sure where to go from here. Do I begin creating SSH keys etc..? At this point I would simply like to connect to my server (security isn't the issue yet).

The problem is that I am currently in Tokyo, far away from the United States. So I have to instruct the people back at the office (who know basically nothing) if I want to make changes to the server. I will be here for another 7 months, with no visits back to the states.

I have attempted my remote login from an Ubuntu Linux Machine outside the internal network.

Code:
# sudo ssh username@xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1
But it always times out.

Is it a problem being in Tokyo? Do I have to be within the U.S. to access this IP address? Have I not done enough work on the Server to get it set up? Do I have to begin making keys? What is left to do?

you also need to have access set up through /etc/hosts.allow file on the server. you could set it to sshd: ALL, or i think if you have a static IP that you connect from you could just set it to that instead of ALL for (i think) added security. if that IP ever changed though, you'd be locked out.

the fact that it times out seems to be more of a firewall issue, though. make sure the port is forwarded from the firewall to the server.
