SMTP port problem QMAIL FC4

Hi all,

I've got a problem with my qmail install, pop is working fine, but i cannot connect to smtp. I tried 'telnet my_mail_server 25' and got a connection error, so i ran nmap and found the smtp port is closed.

When i run qmailctl stat i get the following which suggests to me that the smtp server should be working...

qmailctl stat
/service/qmail-send: up (pid 11433) 1424 seconds
/service/qmail-send/log: up (pid 11442) 1424 seconds
/service/qmail-smtpd: up (pid 13158) 1 seconds
/service/qmail-smtpd/log: up (pid 11435) 1424 seconds
messages in queue: 0
messages in queue but not yet preprocessed: 0
/service/qmail-pop3d: up (pid 11436) 1424 seconds
/service/qmail-pop3d/log: up (pid 11437) 1424 seconds

running 'netstat -pantu' doesn't make any mention of a smtp in any state. My VPN firewall forwards all traffic to the server and the custom firewall script has port 25 open as can be seen below:

[root@ns1 home]# /sbin/iptables -L -v
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
