I am a very very new user to smoothwall and Linux, I have managed to get them both installed and that is about it.
My problem with smoothwall 1.0 is that after about an hour of connectivity I seem to lose my internet connection. I am running smoothwall on an old PC with the red NIC hooked up to my cable modem (Shaw Cable in Canada) and the green NIC hooked up to a switch and then the switch is hooked up to my Win XP Pro box. The installation seemed to fine and I am using DHCP on the smoothwall box. Basically, after I restart my smoothwall machine I have a great connection to the Internet for about an hour and then it just seems to be gone. At this point I can still connect from my Win XP machine to smoothwal and everything appears okay, not that I really know what to look for, but it seems to be working. If I then restart my smoothwall machine my connection is there again, but after an hour or so it is gone.
Please help.
I know that I have not given a lot of info, but if more is necessary I will try to provide it, but please remember that I am very very new to both Linux ans smoothwall.
I've had similar issues with smoothwall and so far the only fix has been to turn off the intrusion detection (snort). It's running on a P200 64MB and I can't find anything interesting in the logs when it dies, but with IDS off it doesn't happen. BTW I'm on shaw in canada as well - not that that should make a difference.
I had similar issues with Slackware, only it wasn't 1 hour... I could never seem to get my uptime over 10 days. I'd have to reboot due to no internet connectivity. The problem seemed to resolve itself, but it's still odd it happens.
Thanks for the info. My Intrusion Dectection was off anyway, but it is still happening. I will just give it some time and also keep my eyes open for more info.
Michael,
I had a similar problem with a DSL connection at work. When I set up the Smoothwall system I used a different NIC than what the DSL modem had been connected to and I could only get a connection for 30min. each day. Turns out that the ISP checks the MAC address of the NIC connected to the modem and if it doesn't match their database, they refuse the connection. I had to call the ISP and have them change to the new MAC address.
Check with your cable company to see if they do the same thing.
At home, if I change the NIC connected to my cable-modem, all I have to do is cycle power to the cable-modem so you might want to try that first.
