slow internet on linux

my cable modem internet speed is 256kbps and i get full of that in windows, but when i switch over to linux(suse8.0) i only get about 16kbps. i have specified dns servers but the speed is still very low.

anyone have any suggestions?

Is it registering a slow speed on some kind of applet or is it physically slower than in Windows? You can run a connection speed check at bandwidthplace.com.

Check that you have your modem port set to the correct speed , it seems that you my have it set to 115200 bps
