Slackware 9 & Linksys wpc-11

Hi,
I have the following problem: I recently installed Slackware 9.0 on my laptop and thereafter proceeded to compile my own kernel
from 2.4.20.
Everything works perfectly...except my linksys wpc-11 v3 pcmcia card (which should connect to a linksys wireless acces point).

I first installed the pcmcia_cs source and then wlan-ng.
I followed the instructions and it didn't work, even though /sbin/lsmod clearly lists the prism2_cs module. Also, Power and Link leds are active (Link led is not blinking) and I get two high beeps during boot.
I strongly suspect that the fact that I use WEP may be pertinent to this problem: I have configured the files "wlan.conf" and "wlancfg-linksys" (initially called "wlancfg-DEFAULT") according to the instructions (ssid = linksys and wep encryption enabled) but thusfar I have had no luck.

I have googled for over a week and found quite a few sites, but either the info provided does not apply to Slackware (Redhat seems to come up alot) or it does not give sufficient info on how to set up WEP.
Many of the search results on google referred to this forum, but I still couldn't find a solution.

I also tried configuring wireless.opts in /etc/pcmcia but the instructions on doing so are unclear to me, even after reading the iwconfig man.

Starting the interface with "/etc/rc.d/rc.pcmcia restart" works, but gives no connection. I also tried starting the interface with the following command: /etc/rc.d/rc.wlan start

This gives me the error message "Cannot find wlan0 module".

I've been trying to get this thing working for quite some time, but still no luck. If anyone has succesfully setup this card with WEP encryption in Slackware 9, then I'd really appreciate it if they could give me few hints on how it is accomplished.

Thanks in advance,

JJ

I just got my WPC11 card working on my Slack 9 system. I too used wlan-ng, and got stuck at the same place you did.

I ended up eventually doing '# /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng start wlan0; dhcpcd wlan0' and it was up and working, although I have not enabled WEP yet, which is next on my to-do list. I would try getting it to work without encryption first so that you know everything else is working right before hand.

I do get the same error message as you, but it has not been a problem thus far. I'll give you an update once I get it working with WEP.

P.S. I was also pretty fustrated that there is a million instructions Redhat, and they all are of no help once it came to the network setup in Slackware

I just enabled WEP, and edited my wlancfg - I made a couple mistakes in the configuration the first two times (probably just do to haste), but the third time was a charm.

So it should work with WEP.

Talking Thanks!

while(true){System.out.println("Thank you!\n\r");}

I guess I had WEP configured properly after all, because as soon as I issued the command you provided I was online.

Again many, many, many thanks!

With regards,

JJ
