slackware 8, second NIC?

Ive recently got a new netgear nic and wanted to put it into my slack 8 box, that way eth0 can be exteranl (wan connection) and eth1 could be the internal. The only problem is that I cant seem to figure out how to install this second nic card on the machine. What files or commands do I have to use/edit in order to get this to work?

Ive asertained that each nic alone does work on the computer. Do I need to add some thing to lilo.conf?

did you compile the drivers in as part of the kernel or as modules?

I uncomented the lines for the right modules in rc.modules, added the second nics module to rc.netdevices, and added the alias to linux.conf. Even after all that It still wasnt working, but somehow, by altering these files and using netconfig eth1 I was able to bring the node up. Then I rebooted and the node is still detected. horray. Though I dont know exactly what I did.
