sharing directories not in $HOME

My computer is part of a three-computer network in my house. On one of my hard drives I have media files (mp3s and videos) that I would like to share over the network. I click on "share" in the pop-up menu and all it says under the "Local Net Sharing" tab is "Only directories in your Home can be shared." I've tried creating a link to the drive in my home directory and then sharing the link but that hasn't worked. Is there anyway to share files that aren't in a Home directory?

I don't know if this will work, but have you tried changing the read-write permissions of the directory you are trying to share??

Just add them to your smb.conf manually. For instance, if you wanted to share your whole linux partition, you could add something similar to the following:

[Root]
comment = Root
path = /
read only = No
guest ok = Yes
wide links = No
