Setting up Motorola modem using USB

There have been several similar threads, but no documented success. Some say "Forget it." One more try ...

I am running Debian 6.0.1a on a Gateway SX-2841 (64-bit) and I would like to set up the Motorola SBV5220 modem using USB because the Ethernet port is used for a LAN (not on Internet).

I am trying to follow the Cable Modem HOWTO. /var/log/messages lists CONFIG_USB_NET_CDCETHER=m, not exactly as shown in the HOWTO. lsmod does not list anything like either CDCEther or usbnet. I am hesitant to try running modprobe until somebody says this is the right thing to do. Help.

Hi LloydRice, Welcome to LQ. Is the modem plugged up? What does lsmod look like with the modem plugged up? What is the kernel version?

Good luck. ;-)

Peacedog: The kernel is 2.6.32. I have not yet plugged the modem into the USB on that machine because I also use it on this (Win7) machine which I am now typing on. I want to thoroughly understand what I am doing before I try switching it over. I have read all I can find about it, HOWTOs, DebianReference, and a couple of books. I am still putting the pieces together in my mind.

I will add lsmod to the list of things to check on when I do plug it in.

Well you won't know what works and what doesn't until you try it. If you plug everything up and it doesn't work, you can always go back to your current configuration to get some help.

Good luck. ;-)

When I say you can always go back it isn't intended for you to go back permanently. What I mean is you have a working configuration, you can go back to that setup temporarily to get some help with the new configuration. You'll never know if it's going to work or not unless you try it. Give it a shot, if it doesn't work come back and we'll see what the problems are and troubleshoot at that point.

Good luck. ;-)

Peacedog: re "go back". Yes, I understood you. Your philosophy is consistent with your byline "Courage ...". I am not quite so intrepid.

No worries, when you're ready just come back with any questions.

Good luck. ;-)
