Setting up ethernet cards in Slackware

I am trying to turn an old computer I found in a trash bin near the dorms I live into a linux firewall. I installed Slackware 9.1 onto it, not problem, well no problem except the ethernet cards. I have two 3com Fast Etherlink XL cards in the machine right now. When I type ifconfig it gives me the following message:

Link encap: Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask: 255.0.0.0
UP Loopback Running MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:2 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:2 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:100 (100.0b) TX bytes:100 (100.0b)

Now most articles I have read so far say it should say something about eth0 and then some other things. One thing to note is that I haven't plugged this computer into the network yet. So my question is:
1. Is this normal and good?
2. How do I get the second ethernet card setup?(I assume from the dialog I get that only one device is possibly recognized)

Thanks in advance

No it's not good.
Ifconfig should show you both HW Mac address .. something ab:cd:ef:00:02
type notation (8 bytes)

and IP address other than the loopback, if you haven't connected it to a network
or given one by statically assigning it, then you are likely to see only what you
have.

Nope, not good. I'm a noob but this is what I'd do. First....

lspci -v

at command prompt. Look for Ethernet Controller or something like that and see if your cards are listed or not. Either way, read the Ethernet How-to. Sections 2.4 and 2.9.5 should be of interest to you. Good Luck
