Setting up a network in linux (ubuntu 9.10 Desktop)

I am new at using Ubuntu. I used 'pppoeconf' to setup an internet connection. The problem is now, in the network connection, it shows that the device is not ready (Though i can use internet, it works fine).
I am not able to connect to an internet hub using DC++
I am not able to connect to a local server like in case of windows sharing.
I am not able to use IP messenger.
Please, can somebody instruct me step by step how to proceed with these problems?
Thank you in advance

I do not know about the other issues but I can help with "not able to connect to a local server like in case of windows sharing.".
On your desktop click on the ? at the top of your screen and enter "file sharing" into the search box and look for the answer labeled under "internet". It should be section 6.3.0 of the Ubuntu users manual and that section should help you get file sharing working.
