Setting Domains for a Server

Know I know this is a dumb, dumb question. But I've honestly searched for a answer, and I guess I'm too thick to find it, so guess I'd a appreciate a pointer in the right direction .

I have a server running Debian Sarge fully setup with a webserver and such, but I can't figure out for the life of me how I associate a domain name with my box. For example, what configuration do I need to do with my domain name at GoDaddy to get it to point to my box? And how do I get my box to recieve and use that? Thanks.

Don't know about GoDaddy, obviously you need a DNS service.

Hmm I'm describing this badly. Let me use a example. Here's a small excert from a tutorial I'm using to setup my server:

Quote:
Setting The Hostname

echo server1.example.com > /etc/hostname
/bin/hostname -F /etc/hostname
My question is how do I have it so that when I set it to be mywebsite.com it will actually mean something, as in how do I get my domain name to point to the physical server machine, how do I get that hostname to mean something?

Look. World cannot find your box if DNS is not set up properly - to point to your box. What is the local hostname is irrelevant in this regard.

If you're only hosting one website than it doesnt matter. You need a DNS service to point mywebsite.com to your public IP address. Then, if youre running a firewall/gateway, you need to configure it to forward port 80 requests to your servers lan ip. Once that's done, assuming you only have 1 documentroot, apache will handle the rest.

If you're using name based virtual hosting in apache then you would need to configure apache to respond differently to different domain requests. But again, with just one website and therefore one documentroot, any request on port 80 would result in the same web content being displayed.

I also recommend easydns.com for a cheap 3rd party dns host.
