Setting a static IP

Hello

I know how to set a static IP, but when I go to set it, Knoppix asks for other IP's that I dont know.

So far I am running dhcp behind an Xp box, on the 192.168.0.x range. Xp box is 192.168.0.1, I want this box to be .2.

So, IP should be as follows:

IP 192.168.0.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.0.1

But then it asks for broadcast address and stuff...what should these be?

Thanks

hONG

again, sorry scrap that. I entered 192.168.0.1 for those and its working. I swear I tried it before and it didnt work...never mind.

Now I got it working, I am curious: what IS the broadcast address and nameserver? Thinking about it I presume nameserver is the same as DNS?

The broadcast is the highest address in the group of addresses that you have in your scale... which means 192.168.0.255...

This is the address used to "broadcast" some info inside the network, for some specific reasons...

There are another important address, the network address, in this case is "192.168.0.0"... this two addresses are always reserved for this purposes...

So... if you want to set a static IP address... you can use this info.. and you have to remember that you default gateway (and nameserver) is going to be the address "192.168.0.1" which means your XP machine...

See you around!
