Server setup

I'm taking an IT class at my local college, this semester we’ll get A plus certified and next semester we will have to get network plus certified. The class is basically geared toward Microsoft MCSE certification. What I'm trying to do is get a head start on the semester.

I have two computers, one runs Win2000 Pro (PIII 800) and the other has Linux and Win2000 Pro which will be replaced with Win2000 server (PII400), this box has removable drives. The two machines are connected together with a crossover cable and share Internet connection with ICS through the PIII 800 from a cable modem. What I'm trying to do is setup a Win2000 server on the PII400 (training purposes only), but when I try to "configure my server" I get what I think is a message that's telling me I already had a dhcp server running and brings configuration. Is this because my Win2000 box is sharing my Internet connection? I cable modem requires me to use dhcp.

Does anyone know what I need to do to get the Win2000 server up and running?

This is my first attempt at setting up a server so all help is welcome.

yes when you use ICS on a Win2k it sets the internal IP ro 192.168.0.1 and provides IP through dhcp.. You should setup ICS on the win2k server then it will be doing the dhcp. Really IMO you should setup everything windows offers on linux. You will then be so far beyond your average windows cert.

If I replaced the ICS on the Win2000 box with a router would that let me setup my Win2000 server on the PII400?

That should resolve your problem since the win200 machine will have no other task then running what ever service you want. That way you will be sure there are no "interference" from an other unknown service. Well, at least less since you never really know what exactly are all the service run by windows.

Side note, I have not worked on win2000 server yet but I'm curently running win NT 4.0 server and it works great. The only draw back is he cost! So go right ahead and play with it!! Dual enviromment with both Linux and Win NT server (2000 in your case) is most interesting since it combine two of the most major server system!!

P.S. please dont flare, know win 9x is not much but as for the NT line cant say it as given me any problems!! So yes I belive win NT is of some value, even compare to Linux.

Oups, should not have written that here
