Sendmail as a SMTP open relay?

Redhat 8

Hi..

Me new here, hope to get some suggestions to solve my prob.

I want to use the sendmail server in my PC as an open relay for sending mails. So far I have modified the sendmail.mc file, compiled, restarted the sendmail to listen to the eth0 port 25. Then if I try to send my mail, it works fine.
In the ISP webadmin box I have mapped my static public IP port 25 with the eth0 port 25. The other hosts files have also been modified to allow ALL traffic. Now for testing if I try to telnet to this static public IP port 25 -- Connection is being refused. What to do??
From Ethereal I can see that the Sendmail server running on the eth0 Port 25 actually issues a RST on receiving the telnet traffic.

Can somebody help out with the exact steps I need to do, to send mails thru my PC from the internet??

thnx in advance

/Silver

Open Mail relay to the internet is a BAD IDEA.. you would be creating a server that anyone could use to send SPAM to the rest of us..

Please re-think you goals..

Thanks

ya tht's true. But its only for testing something and for a very short period it will be like that.
Probably I'll not make it an Open relay and scope to the same PC or another. Does tht sound good?

Don't you have propably blocked it by IPtables? Try to list it by iptables -L and see which ports you have blocked.

You could test your server by this online http://www.nmonitoring.com/open-relay-test.html

Why not implement client authentication ? SMTP AUTH allows relaying for senders who have successfully authenticated themselves. Once configured in your client you won't even know it's happening each time you send mail..

Hi..thnx evryone for your suggestions.

ya SMTP authentication is a way forward for me. coming to that..
I have managed to solve the issue i was having,
to convert your sendmail server into an Open Relay u just have to modify the sendmail.mc file to add FEATURE(`Promiscuous_relay'). This overrides the checking of the access file and allows anyone logging to the SMTP port to relay their mails.

Now I need to avoid that and implement the SMTP authentication.
If I try to connect to some smtp server like smtp.gmail.com, I need to do some TLS procedure. (For my personal mail client)
If anyone knows how to go ahead with that, it will be great.
After the TLS negotiation is over then only I can proceed with the normal SMTP stuff.
