Self Lookup

I have a question about DNS behind a firewall. My office is not registered, I gave each computer a static IP address (192.168.1.x), a name like Patagonia, Denali, etc. and a small hosts file for the Linux box. There is an NAT router/firewall to the outside world.

Upon boot, the Linux computer wants to search for itself, and will hang up awaiting a response from DNS. Also, Postfix is constantly complaining that the computer does not have a fully qualified domain name. Are there any naming conventions I need to be aware of when naming computers not directly connected to the Internet?

It is constantly looking for some ypbind thing I'm still kind of a newbie, but I don't I need this. I want to share a directory via nfs, but I don't need to authenticate anywhere else. Is there a way to stop it for searching for ypbind?
