secure subnets and ping trouble shooting??

Hello everyone

I've 2 problems.

1.I'm on LAN and very often i'm not able to ping other client machines.

Sometimes ping become sucessful sometime they break.

Plus

Very often i'm able 2 access a machine by it's IP but not by it alphabetical name ...e.g \\server1

We use a linux server which acts as a router and a windows server for software development.

We have a BAY LAN desktop switch.

How can i fix this....what can be the problem..plz help

MY 2 PROBLEM

1.I wanna create a secure subnet so that general people don't access it and my network of 10 pcs become secure.

I use cable net 2 access internet. So my LAN of 10 pcs is a part of that cable service provider.

I don't want other users of that cable net to access my LAN of 10 pcs.

How to 2 that

Is that the proper way??

If anyone needs help in configuring and installign ZEBRA router lemme know.

Thank you.

Fahad

It seems odd that you cannot always ping a machine, occasionally this will happen if the machine has been set up with some kind of power saving/sleep features - you can usually turn these off in the BIOS.

If you would really like a secure lan then you either need physical seperation using 2 switches or using a switch that supports vlans. I'm not sure if your switch supports that since I'm not familiar with that model but it should be in the manual if it does.
