SAMBA sharing problem

I have been struggling with SAMBA. I get two problems. The first went this way: Hi! I am a complete newbie, so if this is the wrong forum for the completely ignorant, please let me know.

I have 4 machines in a workgroup called check (3 running XP and one running Redhat 8.0. From the Linux machine, I can browse and access files on all but one of the XP machines. From the XP machine I can't access (but I can see) from Linux, I can access and browse the shares on the Linux machine. That's bad enough, but I can't access the Linux machine from any of the machines that I can access from the Linux machine. I get a message saying I don't have permission.

In short, I can't seem to go share both ways here.

Next, I changed the smb.conf: Now I can't connect to the Linux server from any xp machine and I get this message:

you were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network.

I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to add some info. There are no duplicate names on the network.

Try doing it the slow, simple way... (unfortunately)

Have the Linux box and just 1 XP machine working well together,
then add another, etc until something breaks...
Keep an eye on the Connection logs for smb (via swat maybe) as each machine is connecting.
Remember that it takes up to 12mins for the Browse Master broadcast to propogate names.

Make sure all possible users are activated in smb (including administrator)

Test in both directions, make a file transfer.

Regards,
Peter

Hi thordog,
I think my problem with Samba is like yours.

How did you change smb.conf?

Maxdraw, I just made up a new smb.conf file with the backup I made of the original. Hope this helps.

Peter, thx for the suggestion; I'll give it a go.
