What are the hardware recommended for a Samba PDC ?
I've been told a PDC doesn't need much CPU power, and the domain in question is less then 30 users wide.
Also, would it be crazy to have the same server running proxy (squid) or is that overkill ?
The worst case scenario would be if all your stations were accessing your server at the same time. In real world use, usually only only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the computers are accessing it, and only then only a few of those are doing active transferring. Throw all the hardware you can at it, and invest in lots of RAM. Don't forget hard disk space if you'll be using it for storage.
As an example, I currently have an Athlon XP 1800+ with 768MB of RAM that I had serving out files to about 20 stations with no real problems. It does other things, as well, like ftp, apache, email, etc. I had it serving out quake 3 arena games at one point, as well as unreal tournament 2003 matches with really good performance.
You can use the same server for shares, that's how I worked it, oh and the computer had 100GB of HDD space (yes I amazingly managed to find a BIOS update!!!)
