Question Samba PDC and Win2K

Hi All,

I'm struggling to get a Win2000 machine to see my Mandrake 7.2 Samba 2.2 machine as a PDC.

I thought I'de done the server side by the book, but when I try to change my network ID on the Win2K machine I'm told that my machine is not known on the domain and I'm asked to enter the machine name and domain. If I do this I'm then asked for an account with permision to join.

Anything but root gets "specified password is incorrect", if I try root I'm told that "The paramter was incorrect"

Any ideas or would you need to see my smb.conf before hazarding any guesses ?

Thanks in advance,

Justin

I think that with 2.2 , root must be the one to add machines to the domain.

I don't know why you are having trouble with the root password. Does root have an entry in the smbpasswd file? I don't even know if it needs one. I will try to compare to my system when I get home.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the reply, root does have an entry in smbpasswd, and it seems to be happy that I'm giving it the correct password, because if I enter something incorrect it complains.

There would appear to be something going wrong (the dreaded incorrect parameter) when it trys to add me.

I'm currently using V2.2.0 but will try upgrading to V2.2.1 and SP2 on my Windows machine.

Any other ideas are welcome.

1. Can you join the domain with any other type of client (i.e. NT4)?

2. Check/add the following reg-key on your Win2K client to enable clear text passwords:

Key:
HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\LanmanWorkStation\parameters
Valuename: EnablePlainTextPassword
Data type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1

Hi Kevin,

I only have Win2000 machines here at the moment, but will check the registry entry.

If I set it as directed will I need to change the encrypted passwords parameter to no ?

Thanks,

Justin.

I think so.

I will try to duplicate your problem at work today.

Have you created the machine account on the samba box.

I remember seeing something about NT machines need some type of account, but I skipped over it because I haven't need yet.

Don't change your passwords to plain text, samba can use encrypted passwords fine.

I think that Hazza is referring to the procedure listed here:
http://bioserve.latrobe.edu.au/samba...aq.html#AEN186
and here:
http://bioserve.latrobe.edu.au/samba...to.html#AEN163

I think the reasons you had to do this were corrected in version 2.2 of samba which is why I asked you in the beginning what version you were running. But go ahead and give it a try... who knows.

As far as the password enrcyption goes.. lets not confuse the troubleshooting process with unecessary variables. If you want encryption you can always enable it later...right now.. we are just trying to get the two working together so lets keep it as simple as possible.

Experience Same Logon Problems

You appear to be experiencing the same logon problems that I am having with Samba 2.2.1a and Win2k work stations. The problem stems from the fact that the Win2k box while logging into the Samba Server is changing the permission attributes on the smbpasswd file. So your user account does not have permission to read the file for authentication. Root however is authorized to read the file and will do so. My question is how do I get Win2k to quite changing the permissions attributes?
