Samba: Linux Not establishing itself on network, WinXP cannot see Linux either
This is interesting. The machine not onlt fails to establish itself on a windows LAN, it fails to see ANYTHING or ANY workgroups on that LAN. I made sure Samba was running as such:
linux:/etc/samba # rcsmb status
Checking for SAMBA nmbd running
Checking for SAMBA smbd running
linux:/etc/samba #
I also edited the smb.conf file many times to no avail. The globval section of the file is as follows:
[global]
workgroup = SUSE
netbios name = SUSE
server string = Linux
interfaces=eth0
encrypt passwords = yes
os level = 1
preferred master = no
domain master = no
log file = /var/log/samba/log %m
max log size = 50
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
The Set up is simple:
SuSE 8.0 Professional (workstation), nothing fancy. Windows XP Professional. Machines are networked through a hub, and recieve IP addresses via DHCP.
Any ideas please? I read a lot of posts about Samba on this forum and nothing seemsed to help.
They all need to be in the same workgroup, windows often uses HOME, or WORKGROUP something along those lines for it's workgroup name. You need to change either the windows machine or the linux machine to all be in the same workgroup.
UPDATE: I have changed the workgroup on ALL computers (both the WInXp machine and the SuSE 8 machine) to BUSH. I ran the command smbclient -L and this is what I got
linux:~ # smbclient -L \\Comp
added interface ip=208.152.2.232 bcast=208.152.2.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Got a positive name query response from 208.152.2.199 ( 208.152.2.199 )
Password:
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[BUSH] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
Workgroup Master
--------- -------
BUSH COMP
SUSE SUSE
linux:~ #
NOTE: Even with this promising output, I STILL can't see any workgroups and/or machines using Linneighbourhood. The Windows XP machine STILL can't see the linux machine.
I finally got it to work. For those who have a similar problem, make sure the following is true:
1.) All machines are set to the same workgroup
2.) IN LinNeighborhood, make sure u go to Options -> Preferences and check the workgroup is the same in there
