samba kernal object

When I try to use smbmount or mount -t smbfs I get this error message.

ERROR: smbfs filesystem not supported by the kernel
Please refer to the smbmnt(8) manual page
smbmnt failed: 255

So I try "modprobe smbfs" I get this error message

FATAL: Error inserting smbfs (/lib/modules/2.6.5-7.97-default/kernel/fs/smbfs/smbfs.ko): Invalid module format

I would guess this broke when the server was upgraded last week.
How should I do to fix this? I would rather not recompile the entire kernel, since 1) I have never done that before and 2) this machine needs to stay up for my teams development work. Can I just recompile the kernel module and install that? and how do I compile/install a kernel modules?
I am a bit of a newbie so don't be afraid to state something obvious.

Type uname -a and see what the output is. If the version of the kernel doesn't match 2.6.5-7.97-default then that is your problem, and I'll walk you through compiling the modules.

Yup it matches, so that means I have to recompile the modules right?

"Linux usrv-mag5l 2.6.5-7.97-default #1 SMP Fri Jul 2 14:21:59 UTC 2004 ia64 ia64 ia64 GNU/Linux"
