Angry Samba and Networkneighborhood

I can't for the life of me get my Win2k machine to see my RH7.2 in Network Neighborhood. I can ping back and forth, but that's it so far. I want to access shared files in Windows.

So far I have a simple 192.168.0.1/24 (Win2k) and 192.168.0.2/24 (RH) network. I have done a basic samba.conf edit make the workgroup=HOME which is the same as my other machine.

Note: All other Windows machines see each other just fine.

I'm learning a little each day but am currently stuck. Thanks

windows sometimes doesnt see the samba server right off. you need to show the way. goto add a network place and add your linux box \\linuxboxname\sharename. and one more thing you need to enable smbpasswords so that the windows machine can login.

all the best

smb passwords

smbpasswords are set in the samba.conf file?

Also, how do I create a Linux share? Could this be a specific file on the Linux hard drive?

you need to create smbpasswords for every user who will access the server.

use this: cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/samba/smbpasswd

and then in the command prompt use this: smbpasswd username

homes share should be enabled by default in the .conf file which gives access to the home directory of the user.

I have the same setup at home. You'll have to create the password as mentioned above, then you'll have to login to the W2k box with a login and password that cooresponds with a Samba login/password. And only use TCP/IP (no Netbeui).

netneighborhood

windowszombie,
if you want to see your linux machine in networkneighborhood, you can enable wins support in the smb.conf file.

Then on the win2k machine configure wins with the linux machines ip address. I have done this with my xp pro and it works, although sometimes it takes a few refreshes to see it.

Guys,

I have sort of a similar situation. My XP laptop can see my samba linux box, but I can't get to the box (log on) from the xp machine.

Any suggestions? Pinging also works good.

with your laptop running xp can you map to a share ie " \\server\share "

when I had my smb.conf all messed up trying to set it as a domain controller I couldn't access the server by clicking on it in networkneighborhood but I could map to my home share ie: \\server\homes

if not, than I would double check your /etc/passwd file and your /etc/samba/smbpasswd file to make sure you have a valid login (should have same user name and password as you use on your win machine)

on another note, is your smb.conf set for encrypt passwords = yes ??? 'cause that could do it as well!
