run network connection scripts on boot?

I was just curious how you would run a startup script on boot so that if eth0 did not have a connection(i.e. the cable is unplugged) it would automatically switch to wlan0 so that when KDE boots I don't have to go under the console login as root and the do an ifdown eth0 and an ifup wlan0 to correct the problem??? I already tried inserting both commands into boot.local but of course silly me that won't work becuase boot.local on suse 9.0 runs before the network connection initialization starts.

Write a script that pings your gateway device on eth0 and if it fails then ifdown eth0, ifup wlan0. Run the script from /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
