Hi everybody,
I programmed my embedded system as a html server. Windows (98,NT,2000,Xp,ME) can ping, get html files, pics, even java classes, but I cant Ping my system from a Linux box with newer or older versions. The linux box has 2 NICs, Eth0 for road runner, and Eth1 for local network (home network). Anyone has idea what I'm doing wrong with my linux box? Or is it my embedded program? Any difference between Windows ping and Linux ping? Please help.
what's the embedded systems ip address including netmask
what's the linux ip address including netmask
what's the output of route on the linux box
how are you pinging, name or ip address
thanks for your response. My embedded system ip:10.0.0.100,netmask:255.255.255.0. Linux ip:10.0.0.1, netmask:255.255.255.0. I'm pinging with ip address. Roadrunner is directly connected to eth0, and eth1 is connected to a passive hub, 1 win98 and my embedded system are also on the hub. Output route on libux box looks like this:
destination=10.0.0.0,genmask=255.255.255.0,Iface=eth1.
dest=66.57.172.0,genmask=255.255.254.0,Iface=eth0.
dest=127.0.0.0, genmask=255.0.0.0,Iface=Lo.
dest=default,gatway=case57-172-001.s,genmask=0.0.0.0,If=eth0
all other gateway=*, and flag=U
This may help, but I had a similar prob where I couldn'e ping a WinXP box to RH7.3 or back.
Turned out the subnet mask for Linux was 255.255.255.0 whereas the subnet mask for WinXP/2k/ME/etc. (DHCP with no DHCP controller - using windows auto IP config) is 255.255.0.0
yes, my linux box can ping my win98 machine but not the embedded system. and my win98 machine can ping the embedded system. More and more it looks like the embedded system software is to blame??? Netmask for all 3 are 255.255.255.0. and ips are static. I also tried on a larger network (around 100 nodes) with the same result - windows can ping but linux cant.
Thanks guys.. for your time. The problem was my embedded software. Anyone writing web/network software for linux should know that there are some differences between Linux browser and Windows browsers - the number of bytes they send to the server. Thanks again.
