I have tried to follow this guide, but it hasn't worked:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Debian-and...h_windows.html
I'm using:
- Debian 3.1 unstable
- SAMBA 3.0.21b
- CUPS 1.1 (I guess, I'm not sure how to tell)
- HPLJ-6L via parallel connection
I am trying to get an XP box, and a Win2K box to connect, and use the HPJL-6L that is connected via parellel cable to my Debian box. I have had SAMBA up and working for some time. It works fine as far as sharing files goes. I also have CUPS up and working, I have no problem printing locally from the debian box. So far, the windows boxes can not even see the shared printer on Samba, in spite of my best efforts.
Here is what I have done:
- uncommented the following line from
/etc/cups/mime.convs:
application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 -
- uncommented the following line from
/etc/cups/mime.types:
application/octet-stream
- added these lines to
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf:
<Location /printers>
AuthType None
Order Deny,Allow
Deny From None
Allow From All
</Location>
- configured the following in
/etc/samba/smb.conf
[global]
printcap name = cups
printing = cups
security = share
# CUPS printing. See also the cupsaddsmb(8) manpage in the
# cupsys-client package.
printing = cups
printcap name = cups
[printers]
comment = HPLJ6L
browseable = yes
printable = yes
public = yes
create mode = 0700
use client driver = yes
path = /home/smbprint
# Windows clients look for this share name as a source of downloadable
# printer drivers
[print$]
comment = Printer Drivers
path = /var/lib/samba/printers
browseable = yes
read only = yes
guest ok = no
I have tried restarting cups, samba, and windows, but it doesn't help, the printer just does not show up.
Note: this is a small home LAN, and security is not much of an issue. On the other hand, I really don't need any kind of "guest" access. I have SAMBA accounts set up. The way it works now is: the first time I try to access SAMBA from windows, I have to log in. I am okay with that system.
