I have a LAN:
1 PC running WinXP = A
1 PC running Win98 = B
Now I have a new computer, so:
1 PC running RedHat8 = C
Ok, I have 3 PC on a LAN
From A I can list and read files of B
From B I can list and read files of A
From C I can list and read files of B
Here comes the problems:
From C I can list but i can't read files of A
What's the problem...I'm too newbie so if you can explain me step by step would be great.
What I have done:
First I check to see if I have samba installed:
rpm -q samba samba-client samba-common and it's ok.
Then I edit /etc/smb.conf adding A, B and C:
127.0.0.1 localhost
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx A
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx B
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx C
The next I did was add some information also at /etc/smb.conf
workgroup = THESAMEIWASUSINGUNDERWINDOWS
netbios name = MYLINUXBOX
hots allow = 192.168.1 127.
And I tried to share some files adding this:
[shared]
comment = Testing...
path = /path/to/share
guest ok = yes
My question is: What's next?
I have also another weird problem:
At least from C I cant see at the workgroup: A, B and C
But:
from A in the workgroup I just can see: A and B
from B in the workgroup I just can see: A and B
Why I can't see all computers at the workgroup?
I can't see my LINUXBOX...
Even if i try from win:
\\MYLINUXBOX
I can't access ("...could not find host...")
Originally posted by david_ross Could be a name resolution problem - try connecting using the IP address:
\\192.168.etc.etc\
and for linux
smb://192.168.etc.etc/
Ok, with:
smb://192.168.etc.etc/
I can list A and B but I still can't read files of A
From A and B I cant's see C so I cant's list or read
If you can't see C at all - are you sure that:
1) you have the smb server running (needs a restart to reread the config file after any changes)
2) you do not have any firewall software set up on C
Originally posted by david_ross Have you tried mounting the XP system's share?
smbmount //192.168.etc.etc/share /mnt
Should work - if it asks for a password and you don't have one just press enter.
This work only mounting the Win98 system's share.
I can't mount the WinXP.
Another problem:
From the Win (both XP and 98) I can't see my linuxbox...all computers in the neighborhood are WinXP and Win98 but the truth is that I have acces to Win98 from Linux.
Too weird for me
It could be a problem with the browser computer - on a winodws network 1 PC takes respnsablity for remembering all the computer names and IP addresses. Try setting the values as below:
os level = 60
preferred master = yes
This should make the linux box become the browser computer - believe it or not, Linux/Samba does a better job of it than windows even though microsoft wrote the standard.
