I have searched and seached these forums and others looking for an answer and have tried just about everything i can think of. albeit, i am a complete noob. my problem is this...
just installed redhat 9 on a dual boot XP box. XP uses the same NIC and everything works fine. it connects to the router's DHCP and everything is kosher. now i can't get the same NIC to work using Redhat 9.
when i set it to get an IP address automatically from the DHCP server, it comes back with "determining IP address for eth0....failed." my router is configfured to act as a DHCP server and hands out IPs to all 3 other computers on the LAN just fine (all XP).
when i try to force my usual IP address of 192.168.0.2 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1, the card goes active but cannot connect to anything, not even computers on the LAN. also, when using the router's "See what is connected" feature, i do not see my computer.
i have tried the commands from the GUI and the Terminal including ifup eth0, ifdown eth0, ifconfig, etc.
anyone who can help it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
yes i have tried using the "ifconfig eth0" command. when i have it set to get the IP address from the DHCP it doesn't have much info in it except for the mac address. when i try using a static IP, sybnet, and gateway it shows this info when i run ifconfig eth0 but the card still does not work. the card goes from inactive to active when giving it the static IP info but i can't get any network stuff to run, even logging into my router's config utility which i should be able to do even if the internet is not working. i have been doing most of the changes under System Settings > Network and then checking my results using the terminal.
