if it's purely down to being easier, qmail. sendmail is notoriously horrible to configure. it's so horrible there are two configuration files, one to configure the configuration file...

Just to be contrary, I'd advise using something else entirely. Sendmail, apart from being notoriously difficult to configure, also has a bad history of security holes. Qmail is very fast, but as far as I'm aware it isn't really updated any more. The original version is not open source, so fixes have to made in the form of separate patches and addons, which can get pretty annoying to manage. It also has some bad default behaviour, for example it does accept-then-bounce rather than inline rejection of unrecognised addresses.

Try reading up on exim or postfix instead.

EDIT: okay, a little late responding, sorry for the "popularity contest" nature of the post. I actually use qmail, but if I were setting things up again I would not have chosen to use it. Hopefully the reasons I gave for this will be useful.

Thumbs down Sendmail

Sendmail is the best to test a mailserver
