Question Proxy client problems

I have been trying to connect my Debian box to the internet to run package updates, etc. I have to connect it through a proxy server, however I can't find instructions anywhere on how to do this. I have connected to the internet through KDE however I need to connect to update my packages, I believe with apt-get.

Any help explaining how to connect a linux box as a client to a proxy server would be great.

My I just mention that though I am pretty new to running Linux, I have been looking everywhere I can think and have posted to several boards this problem, however I have never received a response from anyone. (If this is a stupid question please let me know where I can find out how to do it myself, I will be glad to)
