proFTP not starting

i followed the basic configuration for ProFTPD. I got to the point where i logged in as root and ran it. I typed ./proFTPD -c /usr/proftpd/custom/basic.conf

When I ran that, there were no errors, but then i tired to "local host ftp" and it said connection refused.

How can I fix that?

If you're using a firewall of any type, do you have port 21 open?
Also, can you do `ps -A | grep -i ftp` and see if proftpd's actually running?

Hmmm without trying to insult your intelligence, I believe the command should be "ftp localhost".
