Problems with USB cable modem in Kernal 2.6?
Hello, all.
I'm a recent Linux user of about a week and I'm having a problem with internet access. You see, I use cable, and I have to use seperate Linux and Windows boxes. According to the cable modem's manual, you can use the ethernet and usb ports at the same time, allowing me to use the internet with both boxes quickly and easily. I have to use the usb port on the Linux box, because the windows usb drivers don't work. Typical windows...
It worked fine in Mandrake 9.2, which used the older Linux kernel. Just probe CDCEther and usbnet... But I downloaded mandrake 10, which is a major step foward in speed and usability. But the CDCEther drivers have changed. No problem. I type in modprobe usbnet eth. It doesn't turn up anything in ifconfig. I look at dmesg, and I see that it always returns one of these two errors when probing the usb device- error 22 and 75, or string descriptor too short or too long, respectively.
I'm a relative newbie and have no idea how to work around this. Do you guys have any ideas? I really like the new kernal but it doesn't seem to like usb devices. I use a Scientific Atlanta webstar 2100 modem, if it matters.
