Problem when changing ip address on 2 network card machine


Hi

I have a Fedora 7 server with two NIC's.

The two NIC's is connected to two different networks that both have internet access.

eth1 is should route all traffic to the internet through gw 192.168.1.1.
eth0 is should only handle traffic originating from that network and to a special subnet.

It all works well, but when I change the ip address on eth1 from 192.168.1.8 to 192.168.1.5 I cannot gain access to the internet.

When doing a traceroute www.google.com it looks fine with 192.168.1.8, but only '*' is returned after changing to 192.168.1.5!

I have been struggling with this issue for some time and is really eager to get it fixed!


A ifconfig -a looks like this (after changing to 192.168.1.5):

I can't see why only changing the ip address can make the traffic to and from the internet stop working. The Server have been booted but no change.

One other thing to mention is that my DNS setup has an internal DNS server as the first. That DNS has my server host name listed as 192.168.1.5.

My gateway has a build in firewall (Zywall 5), but before changing the ip address I had another server allocated to the 192.168.1.5 and that works perfect. Tracert, internet traffic and other services. When changing the ip-address on the server with the problem the old server is disconnected from the network and powered off.

My Zywall log report three "access dropped" issues with the description:

Unsupported/out-of-order ICMP: ICMP(Time to Live exceeded in Transit)

This also appears when doing tracert before changing ip address and when doing trace from the old server, but only once.

I'm out of ideas, so please help!

Problem solved!

Writing this post got me on the track. I found a wrong setting in the NAT translation of the router! Stupid!!
