I'm not quite sure if this is the correct forum for this post, tho I'm gonna give it a shot. I encounter this very problem: After a fresh installation of Slackware 10.1 on my computer(that is, right after I've installed it, without changing even a font or something) it seems that the interface ppp0 just doesn't exist! I've tried some simple things, like editing the rc.modules files to get the kernel to load some relevant modules (ppp_async), yet the interface just doesn't exist. Am I missing something during the installation maybe? I selected the Full Instalation, and I the only relevant prompts I got were like to configure my eth0 interface and the /dev/modem device to actually point at my modem. Nevertheless, no ppp0 whatsoever. Could you give me a piece of advice on what could possibly be wrong?
Well. First of all, ifconfig ppp0 shows nothing, and what I get from running my dialer (KPPP) in console (in order to see messages etc) is this, after the connection is made and pppd IS SUCCESSFULLY brought up:
Code:
Couldn't find interface ppp0. No such device.
and after a bit (around 2 mins) pppd exits like this:
arr.. You need EVERY reply from all the AT[whatever] commands? The modem actually replies but what responses I get just slips my mind right now, and I'll have to reboot to Slackware to find out.. Anyway, it's not a modem problem, that's for sure. That very modem works with my XP, and worked with SuSe 8.2 (which I used up until a week I think [I used wvdial there]). However if you think the replies are gonna help let me know and I'll just 'fetch' them
Distribution: Slackware 10.1, because Ubuntu got boring

It wasn't /my/ modem either! Mine worked in Ubuntu and XP. When it came to Slack, I had to put these values in. I have a brand new external modem, and what you need to consider is that not all software configurations are equal, distro to distro.
