powerdns 3.3 recursor stops working on slow, saturated network

Just started to use powerdns recursor and discovered that it just stops working when the network is slow/saturated. Also can't find out how to know what it has stored in it's cache.

Not sure why but I thought more people would use powerdns. Or maybe most everyone uses their ISPs dns? And so there just aren't that many that use their own dns. I've been tweaking the config to see if I can make it work better.
