Please help with compiling Realtek8139 NIC driver.....

Hey buds!

I recently tried to throw Gentoo on an old HP I had lying aroung and it did not auto-detect my Realtek8139 ethernet card. So I looked in /lib/modules/linux.2.xxxx/kernel/drivers/net for a driver that I could use to probe for the card, didn't find one for my card. So I got the un-compiled driver (r8139.c) from Realtek's site, but I don't know how to get it to be r8139.o like all the other drivers in that directory. I assume that this involves compiling the r8139.c file??

I realize this is probably a retarded question at this point in the game but can somebody please help me out?

Thanks!
CR

Hello,

You just need to recompile your kernel by adding the support of your driver in the "Network Device Support / Ethernet 10Mb/s" section as the driver you want is in kernel sources

try

modprobe 8139too

OR

modprobe 8139cp

and if not works then

modprobe e100

then check through /sbin/ifconfig -a
that eth device is present or not.
