Unhappy ping:sendmsg: operation not permitted


hye all,

My AMD turian 64 systems run ubuntu 6.06 LTS..I connect to other laptop that used Windows XP Intel dual-core..but i cannot ping the two machines..the ip address automatically set to 169.254.33.21 (mine) and the XP used 169.254.160.45. after i typed -- ping 169.254.160.45, ping:sendmsg: operation not permitted appeared..what is the caused?

i had google before and found one that similar to my problems..but it could not help resolved my probs..

is anyone out there could help me..sorry for bad english..

You're pinging a host as unprivileged user and /bin/ping was not setuid root?

Also could it be that the address 169.254 is an unroutable address? This is usually the address you see in windows when your box can't resolve an ip from dhcp, so it just gets assigned a random address that starts with 169.254??

Shouldn't that result in a "destination unreach" error instead?

jeejasmin to unSpawn --> i ping as root@jeejasmin...i tried again pinging but the result is the same..

jeejasmin to lsteake --> so, could u suggest appropriate ip address that i can use to connect two boxes (windows n ubuntu) ..

Ipaddress group for lan are:

192.168.x.x
172.16.x.x
10.x.x.x

x can be a number from 0 to 255

Smile iptables

Hi guys, the problem is due to iptables. Check your iptables and make sure that is has all the rules to allow you to ping a network.

KIu is right..the problems is caused by iptables. i managed to figure out the at last..but there's another problem occur..i don't know how to save and execute the iptables..
