In addition to what n0xvb posted - by default, smb based shares (samba) use broadcasts to locate and elect a master browser. So even though you fix the routing problem, findsmb will still only return systems that have registed within that network segment (broadcast domain). i.e. 10.255.240.*
The way around this is to use a WINS server on your network. Then reconfigure all hosts on both networks to use (register) with the WINS server. BTW: Samba can be configured to be a WINS server. Also, if you are having this problem on your work LAN, then I would suggest that you first seek the help of your network administrator before implementing a WINS server. Chances are you have simply set the wrong IP address for your linux box.
