Opensuse 10.2 only connects to internet through firefox

Hi everyone,

I am actually a newbie, but I figure it would be better to post my problem here.

I have just installed opensuse 10.2 (GNOME) on my toshiba laptop. Everything works great, except for internet connection. I can connect through firefox by changing the network setting to automatically detect settings, but for other applications such as GAIM, connection through terminals (wget, ping), internet connection fails (connection timed out).

what I have done:
- disabled ipv6 (This worked for UBUNTU 6.10 which I installed earlier)
- turned off firewall
- disabled apparmor
But none of them seems to work

I connect from my campus' network, so I might be behind a proxy.
I am rather lost here, any suggestions or ideas would be of extreme help.

Cheers,
fendrri

You are probably behind a very restrictive firewall and proxy. Ask the network administrators about this or check with other users of the network.

Thanks for the reply auxsvr.
That might be the problem. It also happened in windows when I tried to update antivir...
I just wished that there was a way around it.

There are ways to circumvent firewalls, but you'll need access to a second PC that will act as a proxy.
