No routing when using self compiled kernel (2.6.15.4)

Hi!

I justed compiled a new kernel (2.6.15.4) on my ClarkConnect 3.2 linux distribution (based on Redhat).
The compilation and the boot itself worked flawlessly. But when the machine is booted up, routing does not seem to work. The server has an internet connection, which I could check by connecting to the Clarkconnect machine via ssh.

Do you have any ideas, if I have to enable a special option in the kernel to be able to use the routing function?

When I use my standard kernel from my linux distribution, routing works.

Every kind of help is appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

If you need further information, please let me know.

Best regards,
Frittenbude

Seems like you missed a step or two........ from where the kernel source is located;

apply and patches desired first
make mrproper
cp (a known working config file) .config or use make oldconfig
make xconfig (to tweak to your hardware)
make
make modules_install
make install

Thank you for your reply, Lenard.

I did everything the way you described, exept the usage of the old .config-file in the first try.
On the second try, I used an old config, but the compilation did not run through then. Furthermore when I started the compiling process I was asked several question about function to activate and deactivate (I think this are options which have not been available in the config-file of my old kernel 2.6.9).

I am compiling a new kernel from scratch right now. I checked every menu point and activated everything I could need anyhow. Besides that I deactivated every driver and function I definately do not need.

But I found something new out which amazes me somehow.
After I compiled the new kernel, the routing worked. Only when I checked mail via Outlook or started miranda (ICQ) the routing function got broken. A reboot did not fix the problem.
A complete new kernel compilation and putting the kernel and initrd files into the boot partition (and so on) brought the routing function back. But again only until I checked mail or started miranda.

Could this be a problem in connection with the firewall?
