No network access on Ubuntu
I had a strange problem and want to share it with you, in case you are going through the same thing.
I was using a BeagleBoardXM when the Internet stopped working. Since the other computers on the switch and router were all working, There were 4 linux (one omap4, one AMD64 and one Atom) and two Windows (one XP and one Vista) computers on the same switch. In addition, there were three Windows 7 and 4 Android (two phones, a Kindle and a Nook) on the same router.
Since everything else was working, I assumed the problem was the BeagleBoard. Since I had spare BeagleBoards and MicroSD with OS, I changed them out and the problem followed. Naturally, since everything else was working, I assumed it was an update of some kind with the BeagleBoard.
I checked the web for suggestions and they said to switch from DHCP to static for IP addresses of the various items. That worked in that I could now ping everything on the LAN and Internet...if I used the IP and not the URL. The URL returned that it couldn't find it. I manually set a number of different IPs for DNS-search. It still didn't work.
I tried everything I could find on the various forums but to no avail. I gave up and went to bed.
During the night, I decided that it could be a peculiar mix between the Beagle and the switch or one of the two layers of routers (a wireless hub and the cable modem). I am fortunate in that my business account has a combination cable modem that takes care of the phone. I don't use that because it was never set up. So, I bypassed the whole channel that I had been using and went to the other modem. It worked fine with the baseline MicroSD OS.
Since I wanted to use the MicroSD that I had been using when my troubles started because I had some compiled code on it, I reconfigured it back to the DHCP configuration and rebooted. It worked fine. Since the business modem worked but needed to be set up for the proper account, I knew the SW on the Beagle worked. So, I started tracing back on the other modem. It turned out to be the second router. Since there empty holes on the cable modem router, I move the switch over there and everything was fine, except I had to reboot everything on the switch.
If somebody wants the links I used to 'troubleshoot' the network configuration 'problem' on the Beagle, I can post them.
