no internet

Hi,
I've installed knoppix 5.1.1 onto an old Dell dimension, everything seems okay except I can't connect to internet. When I try to open a page in Konqueror it tells me 'unknown host'.

doing ifconfig -a i get:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:03:47:48:56:72

inet addr:67.177.193.78 Bcast:67.177.193.255 Mask:255.255.254.0

inet6 addr: fe80::203:47ff:fe48:5672/64 Scope:Link

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

RX packets:10238 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets:222 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

RX bytes:646262 (631.1 KiB) TX bytes:19792 (19.3 KiB)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

RX packets:29 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets:29 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

RX bytes:2380 (2.3 KiB) TX bytes:2380 (2.3 KiB)

I've tried netcardconfig & say 'yes' to use DHCP, gives me:

Sending DHCP broadcast from device eth0Operation failed.

Failed.
Hit return to exit.

Thing is I get connected fine on a windows machine with the same cable modem. It is a Surfboard4100.

I suspect in Knoppix I need something turned on, or installed, not configured correctly with the DHCP ... ?

thanks,

Is that your isp ip address? If not check to make sure dhcp is enabled.

enabled

Thanks,
what command would I use to verify DHCP is enabled?

Also, when the connection is up in windows, the ipconfig command gives me

IP address: 67.177.193.78
Subnet mask: 255.255.254.0
Default Gateway: 67.177.192.1

I've tried to ping the default gateway address in the linux machine but get no response ..

I have the same problem with SuSE 10.0.
Have you solve yours? If so, please tell me how.

well hey, this 'surfboard410000' demanded to be totally unplugged from power source & RJ45, then when plugged into the knoppix macxhing & power cycle, viola it found DHCP out there & nameservers & junk (after doing netcardconfig ).
