I installed RH 8.0 yesterday in an NIS environment. I configured the yp.conf file and set the domainname. During the boot up process, the ypbind script fails when "Listening for an NIS domain server." When I try to start it manually, the first step is ok (Binding to the NIS domain), but then it starts to error when trying to listen for domain server. I get an error message: YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound.
I guess I have two questions: First, why is it searching for a domain server in the first place (I have the domain specified and three ypservers)? Second, why is it complaining that it can not bind to the domain, when the first step is binding to the domain?
I've check the securenets file on the NIS servers and the IP address is in the allowed range. I have checked the netgroups file and the hostname is in there.
Well i just wanted to know did you start portmap on ther server
check the /var/yp/ directory for the configuration files in a directory with the named after your domain
try running /usr/lib/yp/ypinit -s on the master server
Turns out, during the install, if you turn on the firewall, despite what you try to allow, NIS is blocked. I reinstalled RH8 and left the firewall off; NIS works like a charm now. Who knows, it may be faster than my Solaris systems...
