Newb-Can linux read media from a xp machine?

I just intstalled slackware 9 on my desktop(tried a long time ago, quit cause I only had one computer and it was never used because I couldn't get my dsl to work and I had to use windows for gaming). Well, I just bought a laptop with xp home and I have the two computers networked and I have lisa set up but I have no idea where to go from there....if I even can. Also, I thought that linux could read mp3s and avi files with the right codecs so if I burn a cd in xp can it be read by linux?

I am using redhat instead Slackware.
I also run xp as dual boot configuration and I am able to run mp3 and avi files without any problem. There are many players such as mplayer, xine etc you can play mp3s....

Hope this help.
