networking-- where to start??

hi all,

I just installed Slack on one of my PC's, have never used Linux before, but once I figured out how to fire up X and KDE, I got pretty impressed by what I saw. I'm hoping to turn this box into a file/web server and get some PHP going w/ a MySQL backend. But first, I need to get the network on, and I have no idea where to start. I'm on a subnet under a Linksys router, and I have about 5 other PC's on it (all Window$ at this point . . .). I'd like to set my Linux box up w/ DHCP and get it on the network, then I can start tackling other tasks, like setting up Apache, etc. Except that I've crawled thru the documentation that I can find, and can't find anything on configuring a network card or a network connection. I have a cable plugged into my network card, and the light is on on the card, but beyond that, I don't know what to do next . . . Any help at all would be great, thanks!

use 'ifconfig' to see if you have the ip for your card. ifconfig is like ipconfig on Win2k. the settings for your ethernet cards will be in
'/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1'

you can start from there, and i advice you to get used to linux with Mandrake or Redhat and then come to slackware

great, those were the exact 2 things that I needed to know. I am now online (sending this post thru Konqueror now) and have even figured out how to change my keyboard layout to dvorak, which is a LOT easier than doing it in Windows. So far, I'm liking what I see in this OS! Thanks a lot for your help.
