Network status shows disconnected after connecting modem through wvdial

I connected through wvdial to a mobile broadband network on Ubuntu 12.04 following this post: http://nikhilbhardwaj.in/2012/05/06/...-ubuntu-12-04/

But the network status shows up as disconnected even though ppp0 does have an associated ip address and I'm able to access the internet. The default applications such as the software center and empathy also consider it disconnected as a result, and I'm unable to use them.

I've also tried the more standard: Edit Connections->Mobile Broadband, but I've never been able to connect using the network manager (no idea why).

Can someone help me get around this?

Thanks,
Abhishek
