I have a router over my hone network. One Linux box another is a Win XP.
I've configured my RH9 with Samba to allow file share the directory /var/file/

I've went to my Win XP Box and went to the Network settings to see all the computers connected to my network. The name came up. "Linux File Server" I've double clicked it but I couldn't gain access.

I've tried mounting a virtual network drive through the network config. No folder to mount over the network seems to be present.

Is there anything I missed to share files?

Did it ask you for a password before you were denied? Get redhat-config-samba if you dont already have it - it'll make it easier for you. And make sure you've either enabled anonymous access to it or that the correct users and passwords are there. Then make sure that they have the proper permissions (rwxrwxrwx) to read and execute the contents of that folder.
