Network Management Questions

I'm reading this book Top Down Network Design by Priscilla Oppenheimer and she lists a few things in chapter 9 that puzzle me.

Quote:
With UNIX and Cisco IOS operating systems, a traceroute packet is a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) "probe" packet sent to a high port number, in the 33,000 to 43,000 range.
Why the high port number? Thanks!

Probably to avoid clashing with an open port (server process) on the address being traced.

The probe is deliberately sent to a port that is probably going to be closed as the traceroute wants to provoke an "ICMP Port Unreachable" response. This lets traceroute know it has hit the host it was sending to without requiring a listening port in order to get a useful response.
