Network card that will work with my computer


I have a dell demension 2400 computer I am not able to connect to a network because the nic card is not supported.Dose anyone know what kind of network card i need and where to purchace. Also my Gnome will not configure dose not reconize the video driver. Please help me

most of NICs are supportted by linux.
what is your NIC and VGA card?
when u r root, do
lspci
and post the output here. dont forget to tell us what distro u r using.

A NIC that is almost always guaranteed to work and has excellent performance and reliability is the Intel Pro/100 series. Anything with an 82557/82559 chipset should be fantastic. Avoid the "security" version of the above, because they have an IPSec computation off-loader that isn't supported by OSS software (since Intel refuses to release the specs for it).

The driver under Linux should be eepro100 (Ether Express).

Oh, and avoid Realtek like the plague! They have severe performance and reliability problems.

I have successfully used Via Rhine and Realtek network cards.
