Suse 11.0, SiS900 on-board network adaptor.

All has been working fine for over a year, when yesterday I got a bios checksum error whilst booting up. I entered the BIOS set-up and saw that the time and date were incorrect. Replaced the battery, reselected my bios settings and rebooted.

The start-up went fine except when finished there was no internet connection. Kinternet showed only my disabled wlan0 wireless connection and the previous eth1 connection had disappeared.

I ran yast and in Network Settings found:
SIS900 PCI Fast Ethernet is not configured, for this reason:

Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present

Also the 'Edit' button is greyed out.

Fortunately, the Wireless Lan still works so I can get the machine on the LAN, but can't get the VMware clients to work with wlan0.

I have saved the dmesg output for details, but there is no mention of any 'eth#' devices.

Help please to recover my wired Ethernet connection.

What have you done to eliminate actual hardware failure as the cause?
Have you re-verified that all your BIOS settings are correct?
Is it possible that you unseated the LAN card while you were changing the BIOS battery?

The Lan card is integrated on the motherboard.

I've tried several bios settings, including the various default ones.

I'm just about to try running with a live cd, wireless card removed.

Will post back results, that may be tomorrow am for me, it's nearly past my bedtime!

if its not the settings in your bios I'd recommend to install the network-card into another computer (I think it's not an onboard-card?) and test if there it is working. If not, it may be damaged.

Yes, it's onboard. Am just trying a live cd (Sabayon Linux).

Problem solved

No eth0 with Sabayon Linux either, but there is now.
I should have known better, I do design computer hardware!

All I had to do was clear the bios settings, after changing the battery, with the motherboard link then set them up again.

So here is the computer with eth0 running from a live cd.

Many thanks for making me think a bit harder.
